Square Enix Joins Forces with Animoca Brands for Symbiogenesis NFT Game

Square Enix, the renowned developer behind popular JRPG franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, has announced a collaboration with major metaverse investment firm Animoca Brands to develop its own crypto-based NFT game.

Under the partnership, Square Enix will work with Animoca Brands to bolster the marketing efforts for “Symbiogenesis,” the upcoming game featuring a collection of 10,000 Ethereum NFTs.

Symbiogenesis, a narrative adventure game set in a devastated high fantasy world, will allow players to assume the roles of their Ethereum NFT avatars. These avatars can interact with other in-game NFTs minted on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon. Ownership of an NFT is required to access the Symbiogenesis game.

Animoca Brands Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of Animoca Brands, will lend its expertise to support the game’s marketing, expand its Japanese products overseas, and facilitate NFT sales. The game will also be featured on Animoca Brands Japan’s upcoming NFT launchpad, scheduled to launch in the summer of 2024 with support for both Ethereum and Polygon networks.

This collaboration marks another milestone in the relationship between Square Enix and Animoca Brands, following Square Enix’s previous investment in Animoca’s NFT game “The Sandbox” in 2020. Symbiogenesis represents Square Enix’s continued foray into the crypto space, building on its previous ventures such as the launch of Final Fantasy VII-based NFTs on Polygon in 2022.
